We may be getting a late start in the year to collection development due to a tech fiasco with the new FAST testing in Florida, but better late than never! Between FAST testing and Hurricane Ian closures, I have only been open for checkout/students a total of two weeks (gaaahhhhh). Our fall purchase deadline for county funds happens at the end of this month, so I rushed in a few classes and put a digital blast out to the school to fill out our book survey. This is DIFFERENT than our book/genre interest survey, where we help pair kids up with books we already have.

PreviewBelow are a short selection of titles I currently have in a "to-order" list for my collection. As a reminder, I am a middle school librarian/media specialist with grades 6-8, ranging ages from 10-15ish. I will include my rational for each, along with the summary from publisher and reviews. I currently use Follett Titlewave so the prices below are reflective of them currently through that vendor. Aso, I highly recommend you use Teachingbooks.net if you don't already (and get a subscription if you can) for further resources.
Depending on what training you've had and what your school/district policy is on book selection, you may feel lost and overwhelmed with the process. Book selection policies are a HUGE topic right now due to this past year of book challenges/banning. If your school/district already has a policy, I recommend you get very well acquainted with it. If you don't, OR you think your should be updated, I HIGHLY suggest you make one and get it approved by your principal, supervisor, and even superintendent.
If you need to make one, I highly suggest looking through ALA's Selection Criteria Toolkit. |
